The Flowers
The Flowers was a punk band from Scotland.
The Flowers were formed in 1976 in Edinburgh as a response to the explosion of the punk scene in the USA and England. The band started with Hilary Morrison on vocals, Andy Copland on guitar, Fraser Suthehrland on bass, and Simon Best on Drums. The band burst forth in the same wave of music that saw the start of bands such as the Scars, Josef K, and the Fire Engines.
The Flowers were described as a curious mix of post-punk, with overtones of contemporary funk, and a hint of melodic pop. The band played throughout the UK, and had regular positions as openers for bands such as Human League and the Mekons. The Flowers completed a tour with The Beat and OMD. The Flowers separated in the 1980s. Throughout it lifetime the group only had one lineup change, when Simon Templar replaced Fraser Sutherland on the bass.
The Flowers’ discography consists of several tracks that were published on various local compilation albums. Firstly, the Flowers saw themselves on the very first Earcom compilation, with two of their singles. One of these songs was also featured on a similar US based compilation. The band also recorded a session for Radio 1, which was played in late 1979.
