Chemikal Underground
Chemikal Underground is an independent Scottish record label, which has produced some of the country’s most recognized artists.
Chemikal Underground was formed in 1994 by the Glasgow based rock band The Delgados. The label was originally started just to release the band’s first single, but went on to find great success in breaking several high profile bands.
The success of Chemikal Underground started with release of an album by the band Bis, whose first single earned a slot on the Top of the Pops. The label now had money to expand into further bands, such as Mogwai and Arab Strap. In later years, the label found success in releases from Magoo, Aereogramme, Cha Cha Cohen, Suckle, De Rosa, and Mothers and the Addicts. For several years Chemikal Underground has been releasing compilation albums with bands not signed to them.
Aside from fiscal success, Chemikal Underground is most renowned for repeatedly signing some of the country’s best known and celebrated indie bands. Many musicians also praise the label for being genuinely in the interest of musicians, and having been started by the Delgados band members personally.
